Mind – Brain and Depression What is Mind? It’s difficult to answer in a word what is mind? The attributes that make up the mind are debated. Some psychologists that only the ” higher” intellectual functions constitute mind, particularly reason and memory. In this view the emotions – love, hate, fear and joy – are more premative or subjective in nature and should be seen as different from the mind as such. Others argue that various rational and emotional states can not be separated that they’re of the same nature and origin. Therefore, it should be considered all part it as mind. Mind And Thought: In popular usage, Mind is frequently synonymous with Thought. The private conversation with ourselves that carry on ‘ inside our heads’. Thus we ” make up our minds”, “change our minds” or are ” off two minds” about something. One of the key attributes of the mind in this sense is that it’s a private sphere to which no one but the owner has access. No one else can ” know our minds”. They can only interpret what we consciously or unconsciously communicate. This we can say, the mind is a set of cognitive faculties. They are including consciousness, imagination, perception, thinking, judgement, language and memory. It’s usually defined as the faculty of entity’s thoughts and consciousness. It holds the power of imagination, recognition, and appreciation. And also is responsible for processing feelings and emotions, resulting in attitudes and actions. Moreover, the mind is also portrayed as the stream of consciousness. It’s a system where sense impression and mental phenomena are constantly changing. The Relation Between Mind And Brain : Mind and Brain are not the same. Our Brain is part of the visible, tangible world of the body. The Brain is the central processing unit of the Body. So it plays a key role in translating the content of the mind. These are our thoughts, feelings, attitudes, beliefs, memories and imagination. The Brain acts as a translator. This central processing unit of the body is translating the content of the mind into complex patterns of nerve cells firing and chemical release. What Is Cerebrum? The Cerebrum is the large outer part of the Brain. It controls reading, thinking, learning, speech, emotionsIt also helps to act muscle movement like walking. Moreover, the cerebrum controls vision, hearing, and other senses. So we can say that the mind, after all, is generally regarded as synonymous with our thoughts, feelings, memories, beliefs, and as the source of our behaviours. It’s not made of material, but we think of it as quite powerful, or even as who we are. More Definition of The Brain: We will try to discuss in detail about brain. Naturally the brain is three – pounds slab of Tofu – Textured tissue inside our skull. It’s recognised as the physical source of all that we call mind. If we are having a thought or experiencing an emotion, it’s because our brain has done something. Specifically, electrical signals crackled along a whole bunch of neurons and those neurons handed off droplets of neurochemicals like runners handing off a baton in a relay race. Secondly, Brain is a biological components of our body, whereas mind is derived from generations -, our ancestral elements.Recently, I have gone through an article by Professor, B. N. Hegde ( Former Prof. Of Cardiology, University of London) -” The way to get back on his feet ” in Hindu Daily dated 23.10. 2011. The article says that through mind we can transmit electromagnetic energy at a speed of 186000 miles per second, whereas chemical energy is travelling at a speed just one centimeter per second. The miraculous thing is that Brain is required for enabling our mind to do this travelling. Moreover, living organisms must receive and interpret environmental signals in order to survive. The signal reach the single cells through their antenna in the cell walls. Therefore, our connection with the outer world is through the cell walls, ie. our true brain. BRAIN DIES, BUT MIND NEVER:? Our brains die immediately on our death, whereas mind never dies immediately. Sometimes it takes centuries for its death.I think there is a very subtle differences between the brain and the mind. Perhaps it’s normally below our threshold level. So this difference is not brought to our perceptible level.Ordinarily there is no distinction between them. Only the regular practitioner of meditation and yoga can understand the difference between brain and mind clearly. Otherwise, all is guess work.
